While the iPhone and other smartphones have definitely taken over mobile gaming by storm, on-screen controls and buttons are just not adequate replacements for physical control buttons. That is why we have been seeing a growing number of add-on control pads for smartphones. Razer is of course a very well known brand for high end gaming peripherals and when Razer released the Razer Junglecat game controller, it made all of us sit up and listen.

One of the biggest problem with iPhone game controllers are that they make your phone really bulky. Suddenly, your slim and svelte phone just became a big, fat, ugly portable game console. We wouldn’t mind using the controllers when playing at home but we just wouldn’t think of carrying them around with us which kinda defeats the whole idea of portable gaming.

The Razer Junglecat on the other hand is mounted like a phone case and it adds a little to the overall width and height of the iPhone but doubles the thickness. It is not exactly slim but we have seen extended battery cases that add even more bulk to the iPhone. We love the fact that the controls slides out from under the iPhone which is reminiscent of the Sony Xperia Play design. When closed, you can’t even tell there is a game pad hidden underneath.

The buttons do not have much travel and there is no analog pad, just a D-pad. We suspect Razer compromised on both in order to keep the Razer Junglecat as slim as possible.

The verdict is still out on whether the Razer Junglecat is the best iPhone game controller but if we are to only consider game controllers that we actually carry along with us, it easily wins hands down.
