I am Asian. That means growing up I was subjected to piano lessons. It was fun in the beginning but very soon, piano lessons and practice became one of the most dreaded activity of my childhood. Of course, years later, I subjected my daughter to the same. Although she is much better at it than I ever was, it was obvious that not much has changed in the way piano is taught. The LUMI Key is a smart portable keyboard that hopes to change the way we learn how to play music on a piano or keyboard. More importantly, it hopes to make learning piano a fun activity.

LUMI Key
Advanced players can add a second LUMI Key

The LUMI Key uses gamification. If you are familiar with the video game “Guitar Hero”, you know what I am talking about. Instead of learning to read notes and making out the time difference between a minim and a quaver, you jump right into learning to play simple but familiar tunes. Within minutes, you will be playing Pachelbel’s “Canon” and the “Overture” from Carmen. All without learning to read a single note.

The device pairs wirelessly with a smartphone or tablet and an app is required. It has just 24 keys which I guess is sufficient for a beginner. As you get more advanced, it is possible to add a second LUMI Key to create a 48 key keyboard. Also, with just 24 keys, it is possible to make the device portable. The ability to bring it anywhere with you is one of its big attractions. You can play it on the bed at home or on the bus, on the way to school. This and the fun gaming experience makes the LUMI Keys perfect for the kids.
