The gTar Smart Guitar may look like a game controller for Rock Band or one of those musical instrument playing games but trust us, the gTar is not a toy and in many ways it is much more than just a guitar. The fact that it has a dock that you can dock in your iPhone 4/4s is more gimmicky than anything. You can connect the gTar to a computer or an iPad via a USB cable and it will work just as well but perhaps not as eye catching with the iPhone sitting in the dock.
The gTar Smart Guitar works with a wide variety of apps on the iPhone including many that can be used to learn to play the guitar. The fretboard lights up showing you exactly where to place your fingers. The gTar is built like a real guitar with real frets and real strings so the skills that you learn can be immediately transferred to any guitar. It is a fun way to learn to play the guitar.
However if you already play the guitar, that doesn’t mean that the gTar is of no use to you. The gTar is a MIDI/synth guitar controller. Most synth controllers use a keyboard for input which is just fine if you are comfortable with playing the keyboard. If you are more comfortable with a guitar, the gTar makes a perfect synth controller and allows you to do things with a guitar that no other guitar can do. Check out the video below on the use of the gTar as a synth guitar.
