The EcoSphere Closed Aquatic Ecosystem is kinda like those Sea Monkeys kits from our younger days. However instead of a kit that you have to put together, the EcoSphere comes as a complete item. It is complete ecosystem with sea water, algae, bacteria and live marine shrimp, all enclosed in a sealed glass sphere. All you need to do is to place the EcoSphere in sunlight.

Unlike an aquarium, you do not need to feed the shrimp or change the water. The ecosystem is self contained and self sustaining. While the EcoSphere Closed Aquatic Ecosystem makes for a fascinating work of art, it incorporates scientific technology that may allow human beings to explore far reaches of space. The “closed ecosystem” is the result of a Jet Propulsion Labs workshop study.

The average lifespan of an EcoSphere Closed Aquatic Ecosystem is between 2 to 3 years and the shrimp have a life expectancy of 5 yeras. However, some of the oldest EcoSpheres are more than 10 years old and are still thriving. This is the perfect gift for the kids if you don’t want to eventually explain why Gumby the guppy fish is floating upside down in the fish tank.

The EcoSphere Closed Aquatic Ecosystem is available in four different sizes.
